Blog Statistics

posted Sunday, 1 April 2007

Every good blog owner should know how to properly make use of his/her blog's statistics, as they provide valuable feedback about what your visitors are really reading and who your visitors really are. Judging by the number of hits of different pages coming from different referring sites at different times, you can get a very good idea of who your audience is.

Note 1: What is a hit? A hit is when someone has visited one of the pages in your blog, whether it be the front page or one of the individual blog entry pages. We do include any hits you may have generated and a full raw log is available for a premium for use in statistical packages.

Note 2: All your blog stats are shown according to the GMT0 timezone.

To access your blog's statistics, log in to the Administration interface, then go to the Statistics tab on the main menu bar.

There are several sub-pages available to you here. Here's a quick description of each.

Total Hits Monthly Summary

This default page is one of the most useful of the Statistics section. It can show you up to hour-by-hour detailed statistics for your blog.

When you first click on the Total Hits Monthly Summary, it will show you a bar-graph representation and numerical values for the number of hits for each day of the month.

If you click on one of the days, you will see a breakdown of the detailed statistics for that day in hours. Bar graphs and numerical values of the hits for each day are made available to you, as well as the Referrer Breakdown and country, agent and page breaksdowns for that specific month.

So now you can see when your visitors usually read the blog, before dinner, after, or maybe while eating!

Agent Summary Report

The agent summary report subpage will show bar graph and numerical value representations of the browsers your blog's visitors most often use to visit your site.

Referrer Summary Report

From this sub-page, you can access a list of the sites which most often referr visitors to your blog. Also, from here you can report as spam those unscrupulous sites that use link-trading as a means to achieve higher standing in search engines.

Monthly summary

This is the first tab over on the right hand side of the page. It will give you your bandwidth totals for each month, in descending order of date. All blogs have a 2GB Bandwidth limit which includes only text at this time (images are not included). Keep an eye on this tab, it will tell you when you are getting close to your limit.

You can purchase a bandwidth reserve at any time. Emails will be sent out to those who are close to needing a reserve. We will calculate daily and try to estimate if you will run out on any given month. You do not have to purchase extra bandwidth if you do not want to. You can correct and reduce bandwidth very easily by reducing the number of entries on your home page, or changing to summary only entries on your home page at any time.

Top Read Blogs

These can be found on the right hand side. Here you can see four different lists, these being Top Read Blogs of the last 7 days, Top Commented Blogs of the last 28 days, and finally Top Commented Blogs of all time. Each of the 3 lists are divided into two columns, the first column containing the titles of the blog entries, and the second column containing a numerical value which is either the number of visits for the Top Read columns, or the number of comments for the Top Commented columns.

Widgets

Finally, if you'd like the world to know just how popular your blog is, why not add the Hit Counter widget to your blog's gutter? To do so, login to the Administration interface, go to the widgets, main site tab option. Then Add new widget in the area you'd like it to go.

From the widget directory select the second tab general and choose Hit Counter.

Quick Stats

This little nugget can be found on your adminstration home page. It will give you a quick look at how your growing, and includes, number of entries, comments, maillinglist signups and hits since last reset.
